Beginner's Guide to Essential Embroidery Tools

Embroidery is one of the most accessible crafts in the world. You don't need expensive machinery or complex software—just a few simple tools and a bit of patience. From picking the right hoop to understanding floss weights, here is everything you need to get started on your slow stitching journey.

1. The Embroidery Hoop

Hoops hold your fabric taut as you work, preventing puckering. Wooden hoops (especially polished beechwood) are classic, comfortable, and keep a strong grip on cotton and linen fabrics. Standard sizes like 5" and 6" are perfect for beginners.

2. Needles and Floss

A good set of embroidery needles (sizes 3-9) will have sharp tips and medium-sized eyes to easily thread your floss. For floss, 6-strand 100% cotton threads (such as DMC or Anchor) give you the absolute best color selection and flexibility, allowing you to split strands for fine detail stitching.

3. Fabric selection

Start with natural, tightly woven non-stretch fabrics like medium-weight cotton, linen, or canvas. Avoid stretchy fabrics initially, as they can warp your design if tensioned unevenly.
